The Selfridges Eye

In their search for the latest news and innovations in the world of art and culture, our Creative team will be sharing snapshots of their research outings. July’s trips include: a trip to a Sarah Sze show at Victoria Miro gallery; visiting one of London’s best young designers at her studio, and making the most of the heatwave by seeing as much public art as possible. Not pictured: squabbling over how cold we should have the AC in the office.

2 July 2018 – Tim Etchells, at Frieze Sculpture Park, London

The heatwave has meant the grass is looking a bit tired, but the sculpture park was excellent, as always. Etchells’ slogans have consistently made it onto our moodboards over the years so it was great to finally see his work in person.

Runs until 7 October 2018

3 July 2018 – Bharti Kher, at Frieze Sculpture Park, London

Took our second trip in as many days to have another look at The Intermediary Family – a real highlight of the sculpture park. It’s got one foot in one culture and one foot in another – a bit like the artist herself.

Runs until 7 October 2018

11 July 2018 – Sarah Sze, at Victoria Miro, London

Intricate found-object sculptures from the New York-based artist. This dynamic show explores how our over-consumption of imagery affects our relationship with the physical world. Picture doesn’t really do it justice. Also, found out you say ‘Sze’ like ‘Zee’.

This has now closed.

13 July 2018 – Christo, at Serpentine lake, Hyde Park, London

Lunchtime team pilgrimage to Hyde Park was legitimised by having a look at The Mastaba, Bulgarian-born Christo’s first piece of major public art in Britain. Very ambitious work that interacts thoughtfully with the setting.

Runs until 9 September 2018

18 July 2018 – Be Magazine, in the office

The excellent Be examines architecture, engineering, construction and environmentalism. A quote reads: “After a day’s walking, the simple relaxation of taking the weight off your legs, having a quiet drink and contemplating the declining daylight is enough to produce the highest sort of joy.” Great quote, even better magazine.

19 July 2018 – Harris Reed, at his studio, London

Met with Harris to talk about his work. He’s still a student at Central Saint Martins but he’s already modelled for Gucci and has had work worn by Harry Styles on stage in Amsterdam. And he’s only 22, which made us feel very old and a little lazy.
