SELFRIDGES LOVES:

LIVING LIKE A ROCK STAR

As part of Selfridges Rocks Christmas, we’re giving you the lowdown on how to embrace your inner rock god (yes, we all have one). And no, we don’t mean ditching the day job, partying every night and living with reckless abandon (well, maybe occasionally), but injecting your style with a heady dose of glamour and individuality. Rock on.

David Bowie, 1972: Bowie’s favourite bevvy? A G&T, of course (Rex Features)

Choose your poison

Make your rider requests as wild, rebellious or downright odd as possible (but maybe not as wacky as Van Halen’s demand for no brown M&Ms) – after all, every good knees-up needs you and your riotous party ways, right? Pick your trademark tipple and request it at all future get-togethers – we’ll take David Bowie’s favourite classic gin martini (in a glass chilled to 0 degrees, with olives freshly plucked from the tree and ice-shaped doves, thanks).

Prince, 1988: Bring on the sparkle (Rex Features)

Always look the part

Thought rock’n’roll was all leather jackets, studded belts and ripped denim? Not so: sequins and sparkles have played a star role too – just look at the late, great Prince. From shimmering metallics to glittery beading, there’s no shortage of stage-worthy pieces to choose from this season. Now, where to find a pink embellished silk shirt? It’ll be perfect for the office Christmas party…

You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching, love like you’ll never be hurt, sing like there’s nobody listening, and live like it’s heaven on earth.

Debbie Harry, 1978: There’s no such thing as too much luxury (Rex Features)

Make your mark

We’ve all heard the stories of rockers throwing TVs out of hotel windows (ahem, Keith Richards) or trashing their rooms, but as liberating and hell-raising as they sound, we suggest playing it safe and pimping your pad with rock star-worthy homeware (à la Debbie Harry lounging in her sea of sequined bedding, above)… well, there are limits, right?

Grace Jones, 2009: One word: fierce (Rex Features)

Take control of the make-up brush

When it comes to rock culture, it’s all about expressing your individuality – and what better way than with your make-up? So amp up the glam with daring hues, dramatic flourishes and all-out shine – think Grace Jones’ war paint-inspired blush or even a little guyliner, à la 70s Robert Smith and 90s Kurt Cobain. Remember: anything goes.

Marc Bolan, 1972: Rock a jumpsuit á la Marc Bolan (Rex Features)

Have a signature

Every rock star has a signature, whether it’s Jimi Hendrix’s scarves, Elton John’s shades or Marc Bolan’s jumpsuits. While we’d happily take a band tee and rock that backstage groupie look, to be truly rock’n’roll it’s about finding your own unique, ‘I own the stage’ stamp. Our tip: add a bandana, scarf or statement jewels and a devil-may-care attitude (and maybe steer clear of Angus Young’s school uniform).
