Selfridges Loves:

menswear's can't-miss collaborations

Much like a great duet, designer collaborations can bring about some of the most memorable fashion moments. And this season is full of them. Sometimes thought-provoking, often unexpected and always hugely covetable: these collaborations are the best thing to happen since Sonny met Cher. Our advice? Get them now before they're gone.

Balenciaga x Bernie Sanders/Kering

The brand to watch for pushing fashion's boundaries, Balenciaga gave a whole new spin on fashion collaborations when it peppered its AW17 runway collection with, on the one hand, US politician Bernie Sanders’ reworked campaign logo, and, on the other, its owner's (Kering) logo. Political statement? A clever comment on the fashion industry? A cheeky joke between friends? Whatever meaning you read into it, it’s a collection that feels fresh and carefully considered, from the dramatic oversized fits to the vintage influences.

Zayn Malik x Versus

“We always called Versus the ‘Rock Soul of Versace',” said Donatella after revealing her collaboration with Zayn Malik. A little look back at the brand's history reveals that this isn't just a throwaway comment: the Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz and Prince have all performed at Versus shows. With Zayn Malik's creative direction, the brand's link to music is taken up a notch, with a range that has a distinctly London vibe - think leather jackets emblazoned with punk-inspired graphics, distressed jeans and parka coats. While you may or may not love his music, this collection is full of wardrobe hits.

Marcelo Burlon - Kappa-print bomber jacket and jogging bottoms (coming soon)

Marcelo Burlon x Kappa

The retro sportswear revival continues to go from strength to strength. From Tommy Jeans to Stussy, it seems we just can't get enough of some (utterly wearable) 90s nostalgia. Now it's the Italians' turn and, as ever, they've pulled it off with panache. Enter Marcelo Burlon's collaboration with Kappa - a brilliante selection of perfectly cut sportswear featuring the iconic Kappa logo, fused with the County of Milan symbol. If it's good enough for the crowd sipping Spritzes along the Navigli, it's good enough for us.

Dries van Noten x British mills

Fashion's master storyteller, Dries van Noten, gives a whole new twist on collaborations this season by putting logos from the traditional mills he works with (from Scotland to Somerset) centre stage. Sure, they might not be brands we're familiar with, but the quality, heritage and care they weave into each item is well worth celebrating. And while you're at it, check out our Buying Better, Inspiring Change edit of brands that champion British makers, helping to keep mills like these open.

Junya Watanabe x North Face

This is the collaboration that's had the front-row regulars (and stylish hiking enthusiasts) seriously excited. Bringing outerwear from the mountain trail to the city streets, the extensive range of jackets includes butter-soft leather, waterproof technical fabrics and tweed spliced with the North Face logo, plus bold strokes of colour. Miles away from your dad's oh-so-sensible walking jacket, but just as functional as it is on-point: we say, invest now for many winters to come.

Heron Preston x DSNY

Streetwear's man-of-the-moment Heron Preston has come up with one of the most unlikely collaborations of the season: a collection with the Department of Sanitation New York (DSNY). Far from Zoolander-esque ensembles of garbage cans and bin bags, the collection is inspired by the uniforms of DSNY workers - a bold and colourful ode to the men and women who keep the Big Apple's city streets clean. First, Vetements made DHL delivery men and women fashion icons, now it's DSNY… here's hoping the Selfridges yellow name badge is next.

adidas - adidas x Pharrell Williams collection (coming soon)

///

adidas x Pharrell Williams

Taking inspiration from 70s-era tennis stars, adidas' collaboration with Pharrell Williams is just the thing we need at the height of summer: crisp white tops to show off our tan and bold blocks of colour to keep the carefree mood flowing right through the rest of the year. It's a winner: game, set and match.

Christopher Raeburn x Save the Duck

Christopher Raeburn - the designer best known for turning decommissioned military parachutes into innovative outerwear - has teamed up with the clever folks at Save the Duck to create a series of padded jackets using recycled materials rather than duck down. Not only do the jackets feature patterned padding and sleek, contemporary pocket details, but they are great for those who prefer their fashion animal-free. The collection will land in selfridges.com later this summer.

Off-White x Art Dads

Who are the Art Dads? And how do you become one? Tremaine Emory and Acyde, the founders of music and fashion collective No Vacancy Inn, came up with the term after the Yeezy Season 3 show, when Emory posted a few cryptically titled images of prototypical Art Dads like Andre 3000, Kurt Cobain and Kanye West. “Art Dad is a reaction to everything being about 'youth youth youth,'” explained Emory. “There’s something to be said for being responsible, having health care, taking care of business but still having fun,” he added. So back to how to become one: we think OFF-WHITE's collaboration with Art Dads is a good place to start, with T-shirts that declare every Art Dad's essentials: cigars and tequila.
