New fashion soldiers:

Buffalo Zine x Marni

Is Buffalo Zine the world’s coolest magazine? More than likely. The trio of lovelies you see below are Adrián González-Cohen, David Uzquiza and Tati Cotliar – the brains behind the arch fashion mirror who, with tongues firmly placed in cheeks, cast their collective eye way over the world of fashion and accessories. From their east London office, these talented young radicals create highly charged imagery and words that celebrate (and mock) the clichéd world of fashion media. Imagine our delight when the trio suggested they become the stars of a fictional campaign for Italian powerhouse Marni – “Something ‘80s, something camp!” they said. “Plus an interview in character.” And they did.

First of all, congratulations on the shoot. You all look stunning.

ADRIÁN GONZÁLEZ-COHEN: That’s so sweet. Thank you.
DAVID UZQUIZA: It’s been a while since we’ve modelled, so we thought some of our poses might be a bit rusty. But working with a photographer such as Yvan Fabing instantly puts you at ease. We felt innocent under the spotlight, like children on their first day of school. But also ferocious.

What convinced you to come out of modelling retirement for this project?

AGC: First of all, it wasn’t the money. Make sure you get that down.
TATI COTLIAR: It was the perfect collaboration. Selfridges approached us about working together, and our only condition was that it was a celebration of all things Buffalo.
DU: We just wanted to do something about us for a change.
AGC: They made an offer that was too good to refuse, and we don’t refuse much.

How has it been dealing with the overwhelming success of Buffalo?

DU: The upward trajectory of Buffalo is something we never foresaw. It’s gone beyond our wildest dreams.
AGC: Independent publishing is wildly lucrative, of course, but we don’t do this for the freebies and the parties. We wanted to embark on this project as a favour to our friends at Selfridges. It’s a passion project.
TC: We’re taking the pay cheque, though.

How does it feel to be the face of an iconic brand such as Marni?

TC: Marni really represents our core values – beauty, glamour and a limitless passion for fashion.

What did you do to prepare for the shoot?

TC: We always go for a group colonic the day before a shoot. It’s a wonderful bonding experience.

Who are some of your heroes in the industry?

AGC: Grace Coddington, because she started out as a model before becoming a global-powerhouse fashion editor. I can relate.
DU: I’ve always admired Donatella Versace for her resilience.
TC: I have great respect for the people who work behind the scenes to make fashion happen. It really saddens me that they’re so often overlooked. So I would say the maids who care for [Karl Lagerfeld’s pet cat] Choupette.

What is your response to critics of the magazine? A recent article called it “fashion’s most vapid and narcissistic publishing project”.

DU: No comment.
AGC: All I will say is that jealousy is not cute.
