Show your metal

From the futuristic appeal of cool silver to the old-world charm of glistening gold, few hues have the year-round staying power of metallic. So what's new this season? We say, ditch matching metals in favour of a more pick 'n' mix approach. Whether it's a molten-gold knit paired with Saint Laurent's silver tote or a sleek gunmetal blouse with Valentino's gleaming Rockstud bag, you're guaranteed to shine all year round.

Velvet crush

Once confined to ballrooms and Christmas parties, velvet is enjoying the newfound status of unexpected summer staple, with everything from plush slip dresses to tactile tailoring stepping into the light. Proving that there's no area of your wardrobe that velvet can't infiltrate, this season's clutch of jewel-toned accessories are a transitional dream, looking just as good basking in the summer sunshine as they do lighting up gloomy autumnal days. How to wear them? For now, with sleek satin separates in matching gemstone hues, and, when the temperature drops, with oversized tweed coats and vibrant autumn florals.

Slide on

Here's some good news for you: those summer slides we're all loving right now can still have a life beyond your breezy shirtdresses and lightweight tailoring. All it takes is some savvy (not to mention cosy) styling - cue chunky turtleneck jumpers and wide-leg wool trousers - to take them through autumn before the threat of frostbite becomes too severe. New to Selfridges this season, Stella Luna's chunky Turnlock slides are weighty enough to see you striding through the months ahead in comfort and style.

Blank check

Fresh, optimistic and fashion's favourite palate cleanser - white has become a year-round wardrobe mainstay and the inspiration for a clutch of gleaming new accessories. Not only are, say, chalky ankle boots and an off-white bag the dream match for summer's floaty floral dresses and faded-blue denim, but they're also the perfect tonic to autumn/winter's darker, more sombre palettes, from navy cable knits to rich maroon and emerald-green suiting. All white? All right.

Bling me more

Minimalists, look away now! This crop of accessories requires an emboldened approach to all things spangly, whatever the weather. Whether sequined, jewel-embellished or studded, these pieces are the perfect foil to AW17's clean lines and pared-back palette, while adding decadent charm to summer's laid-back looks. Who needs diamonds when you can get your sparkle from Saint Laurent's shimmering backpack or Gucci's gemstone-encrusted mules? Our motto: bling it on.

Sock it to me

Banish all thoughts of your geography teacher's knee-high socks and Velcro-strap sandals - this stylish update on the socks-and-sandals combo is about to bring newfound longevity to your favourite summer sandals. At Valentino and Gucci, striped socks brought a sporty vibe to strappy heeled sandals. The key to pulling it off? Match your colours to create an all-in-one sock boot effect.

All tied up

From Gucci's granny-chic knotted neck scarves to Rockins' 'I'm with the band' vintage-inspired styles, the silk scarf is having a renaissance as the transeasonal accessory du jour. While the printed styles tie perfectly into an eclectic layered look for autumn (think striped suiting and leather biker jackets), see out the last days of summer with yours knotted at the neck over a band tee and denim cut-offs. Discover the full Rockins collection (including a number of exclusive-to-Selfridges styles) at the brand's dedicated shop-in-shop in the Denim Studio at Selfridges London (open until 18 October).

70 years of Christian Dior

For more time-spanning style inspiration, head to Paris this summer as the stunning Musée des Arts Décoratifs hosts a major new exhibition to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the House of Dior. As well as over 300 haute-couture gowns, you can expect to see a wealth of bags, shoes, hats and jewellery from across the brand's illustrious stable of designers including Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Raf Simons (that is unless, like us, you forget to check the opening times and turn up on a Monday to find it closed - fail!).
