Summer entertainment ideas

 Words: Gemma Steele

The school summer holidays: a long break that fills parents with mixed feelings of joy and dread. To maximise the fun, we’ve put together six ideas that will keep everyone entertained, right through to September.

1. It’s child’s play

Plum, My First Wooden Playcentre climbing frame, £319.99

This sturdy wooden frame includes a climbing cargo net, a slide, a den space and a ladder with climbing-wall grips. A kids’ toy that will actually look good in your garden, it’s made from FSC-certified wood, sourced from well-managed forests that operate with no net loss of trees. The active play will wear out little legs, so hopefully there will be no bedtime battle.

2. Keep making a racket

SUNNYLiFE x Smiley, wooden table tennis set, £55

A bat-and-ball set: the guest of honour at any family barbecue. SUNNYLiFE’s wooden version is printed with a vibrant pattern and Smiley motif (it’s all about those joyous summer vibes). A toy that will be as much for the big kids as it is for the little ones.

3. Take your annual leaf

Herboo, Big Wonder grow kit, £18

Punctuating the holidays with watering days, progress checks and harvests, a plant kit is an activity that will last all summer. Great for kids that like to get stuck in (and muddy), this one includes tips and facts for some education beyond the classroom, along with everything you need to grow giant vegetables and flowers. The pumpkin plant can double up as a countdown to the autumn term.

4. Tyre them out

Banwood, Balance tricycle, £149

Designed by Banwood, this bike has leather detailing and a wicker basket that reminds us of a vintage child’s bike. It might be a long way to go until they’re zooming past you on two wheels, but it’s the start of that momentous learning-to-ride process – there’s a push bar you can remove as they grow in confidence.

5. Rain won't stop this play

Barbie, Dreamhouse 75-piece playset, £350

It’s always sunny in Barbieland. Not so much in these parts. While rainy days might scupper some of your holiday plans, this Barbie Dreamhouse keeps the summer fun going. Based on the film that everyone’s talking about, the 75-piece set includes a DJ booth, water slide, car – even a dog pool. Hours of playtime to be had.

6. Find a common thread

Kid Made Modern, On-the-go friendship bracelet kit, £15

Whether it’s a long-haul flight or a stint on the motorway, it’s not a proper holiday until you hear these five words uttered: “are we nearly there yet?”. That’s where this bracelet kit comes in. It includes 150 beads and eight embroidery threads, stored in a carry case to keep it all safe. It also has instructions to teach different braid styles – plenty to keep them occupied for hours.
